Mark Mulligan’s presentation on the Union Hotel
Mark Mulligan didn’t have a microphone and didn’t address the crowd, so the audio is only crowd noise. But we aren’t favoring one plan over the other, so we are posting this video simply in the interest of fairness.
Union Hotel redevelopment presentations
On March 2, the two teams vying for development rights to the Union Hotel presented their visions to the public at an open house forum at the Historic Courthouse. The team led by Frank Banisch discussed their vision for making the building a real, working hotel again, with a restaurant on the ground floor. The restaurant would be run by Matt McPherson, owner of Matt’s Red Rooster grill. The team led by Mark Mulligan discussed their vision for making the hotel into condos, also with dining facilities on the ground floor.
Below is a video of Banisch’s presentation. We will have video of Mulligan’s presentation available later, although his voice wasn’t loud enough for the camera to pick up what he was saying.

Green fair in Flemington: Sunday, June 26 from 1-5pm
Location: Court Street Park, behind the Historic Courthouse.
There will be a variety of environmentally-friendly exhibitors and vendors, and local businesses will participate, also. The fair will also have plenty of kids’ activities, also.

New year, same issues
With 2011 under way, we would like to congratulate Erica Edwards and Phil Greiner for their elections as Mayor and Councilman, and want to thank Linda Mastellone for her service on Council. We wish all of them success.
The new year carries baggage from the old year. The Union Hotel is still vacant, and while the public has been told that three developers are in serious discussions to purchase it, Borough Council needs to make sure that the process is fair and transparent.
Just before the election, it looked like long-overdue wayfaring signs were finally being installed, but more than two months later, only the bases have been cemented into the sidewalk; the signs themselves are still not in place.
On the old Cut Glass site, a developer has completed many stages in the application process to build new housing units. This would mean demolishing historic structures in need of repair, and ending the possibility of converting the site to a commuter rail station. Flemington might not become a walkable transit village.
The vacancy rate on Main Street is still high, though two new retail businesses are under construction and scheduled to open soon. It’s also good to see that a business improvement district — which we suggested creating several years ago — is getting under way. These are hopeful signs.
We look forward to open, public discussions on these and other issues this year.
